U18 Boys vs Old Loughtonians (OLs) – Cup Quarter final 8 March 2020

U18 Boys progress to semifinals.
The U18 boys had the long journey to Essex to play their Tier 1 quarter finals in the England Hockey Championship against Old Loughtonians. OLs have an impressive set up with a clubhouse and two pitches which were used as a training base for the 2012 London Olympics. The match was tight, and the opening exchanges were very even, as to be expected from a cup quarter final. As the first half progressed Repton started to dominate with their superior ball control. OLs gave a lot of balls away with hopeful aerials while Repton chose to play through the midfield which they controlled with Xavier Teyletche who was ever present and forceful. Teyletche was supported in midfield by James Smith with a tireless work rate and threatening speed on the break.
Teyletche opened the scoring from a penalty corner in the 25th minute which Repton fully deserved. However, a unusual lapse of judgment allowed a soft goal and OLs equalised two minutes later. Teyletche restored the lead from another corner in the final stages of the first half. Repton created more changes as the game progressed but converting chances provided difficult as OLs were very committed and physical. Billy Collins was rewarded for his efforts and stand out contribution by pouncing on a loose ball in the D and providing a two goal cushion only for Repton to allow OLs straight back into the game with a second goal moments later, so the score was 3-2. Halfway through the second half the Repton pressure resulted in a second for Collins and this time Repton did not provide an easy way back into the game for the opposition. Repton suffered a nasty injury when halfback Harry Scutt took a nasty ball to the head in the Repton defence D, which meant he took no further part in the game. Thomas Nash was calm and solid in the defensive line finding players free in midfield and the forward line with powerful and accurate passes. In the final quarter the game opened up and both sides created chances. In the 65th minute after pressure OLs scored their third but Repton managed the closing minutes very well not allowing any further chances and were deserved 4-3 winners.
